“Working for NFF is great because we work so closely together with NFF’s product owner. No bureaucracy, just focus on delivering.” Christian Knappskog, Systems Consultant, Making Waves Oslo

“No bureaucracy, just focus on delivering.”

Challenge

The FIKS football management application has tailor-made modules for clubs, referees, NFF regions and NFF centrally, and there are 27.000 active users who appreciate the fit. All official competitions are managed through the system, to make sure scheduling matches, reporting results, transferring players, verifying players’ eligibility and players’ insurance, all become the easy part of the game. FIKS, all new back in 2008, was based on a solution developed by the Swedish Football Association, and has since been continuously revised up to cover new needs. The application was sent on a larger bootcamp that started in 2017, in order to firm and tighten the modernisation of the user interface and the underlying technology. We also teamed up with NFF’s product owner in a DevOps setup, combining new development, maintenance and system operation and optimisation in an integrated, agile process.

Our approach

All football data is made available through a Digital Service Platform (DSP), based on Elasticsearch. Data is accessed by fotball.no (see seperate case description), the MinFotball mobile app and by external information services through a public API. FIKS synchronises personal data with NIF (Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports). Having a team that keeps its head in the game over time, has been critical to crank up the speed and volume on delivering results that meet the needs of Norwegian football on all levels.

The outcome

Not many football associations in the world can raise their flag higher than NFF in tribute to the control of their football data. FIKS processes large sets of data and helps volunteers and football employees to get their job done. The data platform now contains no less than a whopping 350.000 active football players, 15.000 active futsal players, approximately 3 million matches in 80.000 competitions, 5500 active referees, 20.000 yearly player transfers, 1 million people, 1800 active clubs and 3000 arenas.
